兄弟象「草總」謝長亨15日表示「小學三年級的時候，爸爸帶我去看棒球比賽，這是我第一次接觸到棒球」，也因為如此，讓草總與棒球結下不解之緣，成為一輩子的棒球人。
草總的父親謝明看日前辭世，享壽82歲，草總強忍悲痛，15日仍在新莊球場帶兵作戰，他希望能讓象隊在這個關鍵時刻衝出，拿到下半季冠軍。
回想42年前，草總說「小學三年級時，爸爸第一次帶我去台南球場看南部七縣市少棒賽，我的印象是球場人山人海，差點擠不進去，而且當時巨人隊投手許金木的球速好快」，草總的父親雖不曾打球，「不過他是個標準的球迷」。
草總小時候就讀台南老家的西港國小，四年級時，他加入了學校的棒球隊，隔年因西港少棒隊解散，草總便轉到台南市協進國小就讀，就從這個時候開始，草總長年離鄉背井、在外打拚。
「第一年我沒有入選台南市的代表隊，媽媽要爸爸來帶我回家」，這是草總家人第一次要他放棄棒球，但草總對爸爸說「希望可以再拚一年」，隔年，草總果然入選了台南市的府城少棒隊，選拔賽時打遍天下無敵手，不料最後的冠軍戰2比3輸給高雄市立德少棒隊，無緣到美國威廉波特參加世界少棒賽。
升上國中，草總原讀台南復興國中，但只有一個禮拜，草總的父親又把他帶回家，「當時我已準備要去台北讀華興中學了，媽媽捨不得小孩離開身邊，所以也曾勸我不要再打棒球了，但我還是堅持要繼續打球」。 (接下一頁)
