南韓0：1不敵比利時後，也確定本屆世界盃沒有亞洲球隊晉級到淘汰賽，十六強名單出爐後，美洲球隊佔最大宗，共有8隊晉級。

亞洲球隊是繼1998年世界盃以來，再度於小組賽全數落馬，日本、南韓、澳洲與伊朗之中，以藍武士和太極虎賽前最被看好晉級，但全軍覆沒。

美洲方面，中北美洲有美國、哥斯大黎加與墨西哥晉級，這是世界盃史上最多中北美洲國家晉級十六強的一屆。

南美方面，有巴西、烏拉圭、智利、哥倫比亞與阿根廷，且十六強籤表分佈，南美球隊已經佔走一張四強門票，巴西要與智利交手，烏拉圭則要對上哥倫比亞。

十六強對戰組合分別為巴西VS智利、哥倫比亞VS烏拉圭、法國VS奈及利亞、德國VS阿爾及利亞、荷蘭VS墨西哥、哥斯大黎加VS希臘、阿根廷VS瑞士、比利時VS美國。
